  5. How to use Filezilla FTP Client

FileZilla is a most used FTP client program available as a free download online with a friendly interface, easy to use and simple to configure among most popular FTP Clients – FileZilla, CuteFTP and SmartFTP. FileZilla works across platforms Windows, Macintosh, and Linux users.

To log in to your FTP account using FileZilla:

1. Launch FileZilla.

2. Click File, then Site Manager.

3. In the Site Manager window, click New Site and enter a name that will help you remember this stored connection (such as your website name).

4. In the Host field under the General tab, enter your domain name like “www.mydomainname.com”.

Note: If you haven’t pointed your DNS yet, you won’t be able to log in using your domain name and should use your server IP address.

5. Enter “22” in the Port field and select FTP – File Transfer Protocol from the Protocol menu.

6. Select Normal from the Logon Type menu.

7. Leave this field Path/directory blank.

8. In the Username field, enter your FTP or cPanel Username.

9. In the Password field, enter your FTP or cPanel Password.

10. Click Connect.

11. If you’re logging in to your FTP for the first time with these credentials, you may see a pop-up window asking you to trust and add the server’s host key. Click Yes to proceed.

12. Once logged in to your FTP account with FileZilla, your local computer workstation files and directories should be listed in the left-hand column. The local files and directories in your server will be listed in the right-hand column.

Alternative two types of secure (FTP) settings are:

SFTP(SSH-based secure FTP, encrypted): FTPES (explicit SSL mode, encrypted):
Host: yourdomain.com or server IP Host: ftpes://domain.com or ftpes://server IP or ftpes://servername
Username: control panel or ftp username Username: control panel or ftp username
Password: control panel or ftp password Password: control panel or ftp password
Port: 2222 or 22 Port: 21

How to Create a New File Using Filezilla FTP Client

To create a new file , perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. Right-click anywhere in the whitespace and a popup menu will show you. Click on Create Directory option.

3. A popup will come out and put it there new file name. Click on the OK button to save it on the server.

How to Rename a File Using Filezilla FTP Client

To rename a file , perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. Find the file you want to rename. Right click the file and select Rename.

3. Type a new name for the file or folder and click enter.

4. A popup will come out and put it there new file name. Click on the OK button to save it on the server.

To delete a file , perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. Find the file you want to delete. Right click the file and select Delete.

3. A Confirmation needed pop up box will display. Click OK.

How to Change Permissions of a File Using Filezilla FTP Client

To Change the permissions of a file, perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. Find the file you want to delete. Right click the file and select File Permissions.

3. Change the permissions to whatever permission number you want.Click OK.

How to Transfer Files Using Filezilla FTP Client

To transfer the files, perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. To upload a file to the server, drag the file from the Local site column to the Remote site column. After the file transfer is complete, the file appears in the Remote site column.

Note: To upload a file, you can also double-click it in the Local site column.

3. To download a file to the local computer, drag the file from the Remote site column to the Local site column. After the file transfer is complete, the file appears in the Local site column.

How to Edit the Files Using Filezilla FTP Client

To edit the files, perform the following steps:

1. Open your Filezilla FTP program and connect to your hosting account.

2. Download the file.

3. Edit the file on your computer with notepad or another code editor.

4. Re-upload the file to the server and overwrite the existing file. The changes should reflect now on your live site.
