Nowadays, choosing a good web hosting company for their websites has become quite a challenge for bloggers. A poor choice will hurt your site and company reputation.
“For those who looking for an affordable and simple-to-navigate host for their WordPress site, definitely, consider iPage. Their budget offering gives you a nice list of extras, and they provide a great alternative to shared hosting.
iPage Hosting has been in business since 1998, focusing on putting together the perfect hosting plan for any and all small/medium-sized websites. Now iPage Hosting is an Endurance International Group (EIG) brand, acquired in 2010 from founder Thomas Gorny. iPage Hosting now has offices in six worldwide locations serving over 1 million websites on their two data centers, which are located in Boston, MA.
EIG has been around for more than 15 years in the industry, and their hosting platform is currently holding more than 2 million domain names. Endurance International Group also acquired other big giants like Reseller Club, Bluehost, Fatcow, Arvixe, JustHost, PowWeb, EasyCGI, StartLogic, Dot5 Hosting and much more.
Anyways this is just a background of iPage.com related to EIG, and it doesn’t matter much. So now let’s take a dive whether iPage is the best to host for you or not.
iPageBetter Business Bureau Rating (BBB)
Have you been searching for iPage.com on BBB.org to find out what is their rating? I guess you haven’t found them. That is because, iPage.com is not listed on BBB, but their umbrella company, The Endurance International Group, Inc. This company owns iPage and other big hosting providers such as FatCow, BlueHost, HostGator and others. EIG has been accredited business since 1999 and has received the A+ rating.
iPage Hosting Plans and Pricing
They offer one hosting plan: the iPage Essential Plan. Let’s have a look at their features:
- Free domain name for one year (renews at very high price)
- Host unlimited domains/websites
- Unlimited hosting space (200,000 inode limit. Most big sites never reach that)
- Unlimited data transfer
- Secure online store (take payments, sell your products/services)
- Start a WordPress site/blog easily (1-click install)
- Free advertising credits (Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, and more)
The deal sounded too good to be true, and there was nothing hidden set up fees. But you should know that the domain costs $14.95/year after the first year. If you want to add domain privacy, then you have to pay $9.99/yr extra. If you want to transfer it somewhere else, you can easily do so as you own it.
The iPage Essential Plan includes the right features to suit most bloggers and small businesses who want to create a website. However, if you were looking for more advanced features, then there are lots of optional web hosting companies in the market. Have a look at my review of Hostgator and A Small Orange.
Now for a limited time, you can get your website up and run for a measly $1.99/month. That’s a no brainer even if you are on an extremely low budget.
I strongly recommend going with the most basic hosting plan now for newbies. My reasoning behind this is that if it’s a new project, after one year you will know if you should stick with the project or drop it.
If it proves to be a dead-end, at least you didn’t lose much money. If it’s success, you can decide whether you need an upgrade or not.
I know this might sound harsh, but this is a reality. I had projects that proved to be failures, but then some of them had great success. So it’s always good to give your ideas a shot. Unfortunately, iPage does not offer any renewal discount codes, and you cannot get a lower price when renewing your account.
If your website is down all the time or the servers are crashing, you’re going to be in a big pile of trouble.
iPage to be right up there with the best of them when it came to reliability and uptime. They guarantee 99.9% uptime, but there are no stats and records of their guaranteed uptime. Anyways their data centers are located in U.S. Their servers are backed up daily using NetApp Snapshot.
iPage Control Panel Options
They offer their custom control panel. You have access to WordPress, Weebly, and a basic website builder through iPage’s chosen control panel, vDeck. Any option you choose gives you templates from which to work and walks you through the steps to complete your website design.
iPage Reliability and Support
The customer service team was always quick to answer any and all questions, and when there was a minor hiccup with the service their techs were on hand to give the kind of step by step instruction to their customers.
If you have ever dealt with a hosting service in your life, you probably know that Live Chat is kind of like a first line support. They fix the easy stuff, change settings and point you in the right direction. Now, when there is an issue that requires an advanced set of skills, they will create a support ticket to the second line support and leave you at that.
Based on my experience, second line support does its job usually within 24 hours. In case of server outages, you won’t have to wait that long though.
- $100 Adwords Voucher! Start advertising your website instantly!
- Free domain names for one year
- WordPress: 1-Click WordPress installation and compatible servers.
- Secure your Site with Sitelock: You can find and fix malware issues and keep your site free of errors with Sitelock.
- Free Cloud Storage: Store your files in the cloud to access anywhere with a free 1GB JustCloud account.
iPage Money Back Guarantee/Cancellation Policy
It’s always comforting to hear that there is a 30-day money back guarantee. Some web hosts play trickery and will not give your money back in full. Not iPage. If you are not satisfied for any reason, you can get your money back in full. No questions asked.
The 30-day money back guarantee applies to the hosting plan. If you have chosen to register a free domain, the price of the domain will be deducted.
Also keep in mind that other services such as website protection or backup services or other non-hosting services are not subject to refund. If you cancel your account, you will not lose the domain, you transfer it to other registrar or you can point it to other hosting account.
What’s missing from iPage’s basic plan are a couple of make-or-break features for some people, such as secure shell access (SSH), free site backup and site restoration. If site security or anti-spam is important to you, then you have to pay extra for them.
What I like Most in iPage
- One of the cheapest choices with an abundance of included features
- Offers the best value for hosting a website
- Uses vDeck, a straightforward and easy-to-use control panel
- Ideal for anyone on a budget looking for web hosting
- Uses MOJO Marketplace for a variety of plugins, templates, & tools
- Customer support via telephone, live chat, & email
- Advanced VPS and Dedicated hosting plans for future growth
- Easy integration of Google Apps for Work
What I Hate most in iPage
- Expensive renewal rates after your initial term expire (that’s how they get you)
- Weebly website builder is pointless, and its proprietary nature makes conversion to other CMSes, like WordPress, tough
- Often promotes addons & additional services
- Slower performance & more outages than other web hosts
- Transferring sites from a cPanel web host to iPage’s vDeck can be frustrating
The bottom line is that iPage is a great hosting company with an excellent initial price and feature rich shared plan. From my tests and research resulted that the Essential Plan provides the best performance with websites built with their premium website building tool, but it also runs very smoothly on WordPress.
So if you want a small blog or a simple, professional and cost effective solution to building a website, iPage is the way to go.
