Whenever we talk about best Web Hosting providers in the industry, undoubtedly Hostgator comes first in the mind. Hostgator is one of the largest and popular web hosting provider in the industry with 12,000 servers under management and almost 90% customer satisfaction.
However, everything comes with their minus points also. Hostgator also comes with some of the flaws and have conflicting reviews about it. It is normal as different customers have their requirements and expectations.
Here I will share the review based on my personal experience with Hostgator. Before sharing their reviews, let’s first have a look at the company background and history.
Hostgator was founded by Brent Oxley in 2002 while he was in his college. Within some years, Brent grew his business from a one-man operation to over hundred of employees. Now the HostGator has hosted more than 8 million domains for 400,000 customers in all over the world.
Initially, Brent started it in Florida and then after rapid growth of a company, he shifted the company to Texas in 2007. They also have one Indian Branch named http://hostgator.in and a third branch in Brazil with name http://www.hostgator.com.br. They are presently employing more than 200 employees.
Hostgator also ranked 21st on Inc. 5000 in the year 2008 and 239th on Inc. 5000 in the year 2009. Brent Oxley sold the HostGator to EIG(Endurance International Group) in 2012 for $225 (unofficial figure). EIG also acquires other well-known brands like Reseller Club, iPage, Arvixe, etc.
Better Business Bureau(BBB) Rating
I looked at Hostgator profile on the Better Business Bureau’s official website and got that HostGator has been a BBB Accredited Business since 2008 and having an A+ rating (the highest possible rating).
As for customer complaints, there is a total of 291 complaints against the company, out of which 159 issues were related to products and services (i.e., hosting, domain registration, etc.). Now all of the issues are resolved now. Out of 291, 119 complaints are solved the last month.
Whenever I see that, it makes me feel a bit better about a company knowing that crappy companies usually don’t care about their customers and their public image, so they won’t bother responding to every single complaint.
Hostgator Hosting Plans and Pricing
HG covers three different shared hosting plans named: Hatchling, Baby and Business Plan. They also offer Reseller, VPS, and Dedicated Hosting Services as well as offer affiliate programs too. All hosting plans have different hosting services and support features to fit the needs of different users.
They are known mostly as Shared hosting experts, but they do offer decent Shared and dedicated server options also.
Let’s first talk about their Shared Hosting plans. The most basic plan named Hatchling plan is a one domain plan rest all of the features are unlimited, and you can’t purchase the Dedicated IP in this plan.
The hatchling and baby plan comes with free shared certificate and with the business plan you will get the extra features like free private SSL, free dedicated IP and free toll-free number having 100 minutes of free talk time.
Don’t be confused with the options you have at Hostgator, just ask simple questions to yourself before buying hosting service:
Q1: Do you need add-on domains? If no then go with basic hatchling plan and if yes then simply choose Baby plan for your website.
Q2: Do you need multiple domains with Private SSL and toll-free number then go with Business plan only.
The best thing about the Hostgator plans are that you can upgrade the plan from Hatchling to Baby or Baby to Business Plan is entirely free. You need just to fill the upgrade form, and their technical team will do the needful for you.
So if you are unsure and confused, then I recommend you to go with the lower level plan either hatchling or baby plan and later you can request for up gradation. Let’s have a quick glance on the features and pricing of them:
Next, Reseller Hosting is divided into 5 Plans based on the Disk Space, Bandwidth, and Domain Names. Let’s have a quick glance on the features and pricing of them:
VPS hosting is divided into five plans. Again, you’ll need to fine-tune your requirements using the interactive price chart to calculate the applicable monthly fee. Let’s have a quick glance on the features and pricing of them:
Dedicated servers are priced according to the resources you need. The pricing is the same for both Windows hosting and Linux hosting, but the software obviously differs depending on the OS. Let’s have a quick glance on the features and pricing of them:
If in case you want to run Java on servers, you’ll need to buy a VPS or dedicated plan, but Python is already installed on all of HG Servers.
Hostgator Reliability and Server Performance
I had used the Hostgator hosting for four years before I moved to the Cloud based Digital Ocean. But still I have some small blogs hosted still on Hostgator shared Hosting.
Personally, I am always a big fan of Hostgator due to their high server performances. Later in this article, i will also mention the things I like most and bad things about HostGator. My all websites always give me adequate responding time.
As Shared Hosting also affects the search engine rankings so it’s vital to do stick with the fast web host. Also, HostGator has been in the industry for a very long time, so you can feel safely assured that they are not a scam and will be around for the long term.
HostGator operates their data center from 4 leased facilities, all owned by The Planet, in Texas. UPS power supply, fire detection and 24/7 monitoring by in-house technical staff make sure of the security and safety of their 12,000 servers.
The hardware includes from AT&T and Time Warner. They are currently offering 99.9% uptime guarantee, but they don’t publish any stats ever. All the accounts hosted on their servers are backed up on a weekly basis except for dedicated servers. They charge $15 for that backups to be restored.
They don’t allow overselling on their shared servers and for VPS & Dedicated server you can allow overselling at your risk.
Hostgator Great Support
HostGator support includes Extensive Online Knowledge Base for Common Hosting Issues and 24/7/365 Live Support via Email, Phone, and Chat.
Their support and billing help is available via their secure portal where clients can log in and can access user forums, watch more than 600 video tutorials and knowledgebase on some of the most common configuration questions you face. This account login credentials are different from your cPanel login details.
This account login credentials are different from your cPanel login details. Host Gator’s CEO promises that if all of your options are exhausted, he’ll handle your ticket himself.
Hostgator Control Panel Options
All Hostgator Plans use latest cPanel software to power their administration consoles. cPanel provides access to all the features you’ll need, including webmail, one-click backups and DNS settings for Google Apps.
You can easily organize tasks like launching e-commerce shopping carts. Using cPanel Backend panel you can quickly collect stats and logs using AWStats, Webalizer, Raw Log Manager, and Error Logs. A web-based file manager will help you keep your server clean and free of junk.
Reseller accounts are also provisioned with cPanel and WHM. Both cPanel and WHM are optional on VPS and HostGator’s Linux dedicated server hosting plans. On VPS Servers, HostGator also provides Virtuozzo Power Panel, an administration package for the server itself.
There are lots of freebies that comes along with HostGator service plans.
- The Hostgator Business Shared Plan includes a toll-free number with 100 minutes of free talk time for US Customers only.
- With each hosting Service plan you can get unlimited disk space and bandwidth, a free website builder and website building tools, approximately 4,000 website templates, free domain transfers, and unlimited mySQL databases.
- With HostGator Shared hosting plans you can get $100 Adwords credit, and reseller accounts can get a free upgrade to an eNom domain reseller account.
- Additionally, there are 1-click installs available for all of the major open-source projects, such as WordPress, Joomla, and Magento.
You don’t have to worry about spam because HostGator includes Spam Assassin in each of its packages, a robust spam protection program that effectively keeps unwanted junk emails out of your inbox.
This shared host does not offer a dedicated IP or private SSL at this level but does provide a shared SSL. This is a lower form of protection but still encrypts private information like credit card transactions.
Hostgator Money Back Guarantee or Cancellation Policy
Hostgator offers a 45-day money back guarantee which gives you more than enough time to try out HostGator and make sure that their hosting can serve your needs.
But a full refund is not applicable to dedicated servers. As in dedicated servers, they incurred the admin and installation fees so that is nonrefundable and domain purchases are also nonrefundable.
You have to send the Cancellation request by their particular online cancellation form. Refunds are sent via credit card or PayPal.
The things I like most about Hostgator:
- 45 Days Money Back Guarantee
- WordPress Specialized
- Unlimited Traffic, Emails
- 24*7 Technical Support
- 99.9% Uptime Guarantee
- Ease of Use
- Eco-Friendly Hosting
- Affordable Business Hosting Plan
Minus Points of Hostgator:
- Slow customer support: Their support and technical staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. But still the biggest minus point is their long waiting times to reach out to their professional persons on chat and call. It often takes more than 20, or sometimes 30 minutes to reach them.
If I compare this point to other hosting companies like in motion hosting, Bluehost, etc., they reach out to you within 5 minutes.
I hope the Gators will look into the said problem and fix things up asap. The technical support at Hostgator used to be so good in the past before 2012. The Gator’s live chat support used to be the best for me but not now anymore.
HostGator is targeted towards beginners or those that are looking to host simple websites. They offer nice VPS and dedicated options to folks whose sites grow outgrow shared servers.
Plus, HostGator’s been around for over a decade, and they have solid customer support available. If you’re into staying green, HostGator offsets its carbon footprint with wind power.
Considering the company claim that more than 1% of the planet’s internet traffic flows to and from HostGator’s 12,000 servers, that’s a big achievement. Their big technical support, freebies, comprehensive and scalable features make them an ideal choice for a new business that’s looking to grow.
All in all, they offer a rounded feature set for an affordable price with a whole host of extra features to keep loyal customers happy. Have experience with Hostgator? Awesome! Please leave a review below!
