FatCow focuses on small businesses and individuals and claims to offer some of the top web hosting services in the industry. Based in 1998 the company appeared to use a “more customer friendly approach”, that is to do a lot more to meet client needs. And that is probably one of the reasons why FatCow hosting site includes on many ten best web hosting lists around the internet.

The FatCow team believe they provide simple, useful and valuable service and hosting which is easy to own and use. They offer a hosting plan that they assume is perfect for those who start their own business or look for a placeholder for some domains.

FatCow is a green web host what means wind energy powers their data centers and offices. The company has Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), or Green tags that represent the benefits of wind energy for the environment.

BBB Rating

It’s always a good thing to check BBB before signing up for a service. As always I check out the Better Business Bureau website for scores. But I was surprised to see that FatCow itself does not have a profile on bbb.org. Instead, it is listed under its parent company, EIG. Which is weird considering that other subsidiaries of EIG like iPage are listed on BBB separately. They have an A+ rating; the best a company can reach on the Better Business Bureau.

Powerful Features of FatCow at Glance:

  • Green Hosting
  • Use of installation wizards
  • Use of selling and online store tools
  • Regular reports about your website visibility
  • Support for MySQL databases and PHP 5
  • Use of their primary site builder free of charge

Let’s explain the features:

FatCow does offer a service that will help safeguard your files. Meaning they have a unique service called SiteLock which one added protection to your server and secondly can restore any data that might have been corrupt if your website was infected with malware. This service is not free, though. Instead, you will have to pay an extra monthly expense.

FatCow DataCenter

FatCow uses two large data centers in the Boston, MA area, with over 800 Servers in both of them and half a Petabyte of storage. Their network infrastructure includes a pooled server environment that gives servers access to website files if needed. This, along with web hosting services, allows customer sites to provide faster loading time and minimize suspensions as compared with usual hosting networks.

FatCow data centers common features are:

  • night and day security
  • running on N+1 power (A/C + D/C)
  • similar network architecture and equipment.

The provider’s front-end infrastructure includes dual redundant M7I routers and two firewalls with IDP technology cross-connected to the outside world with BGP border gateway protocol.

Customer & Technical Support

FatCow’s support engineers are available to help you 24/7 via chat, phone, and email. If you’re more the DIY type, they maintain a helpful library of tutorials and how-tos. FatCow swears by their “HeiferCratic Oath.” This means that their support crew is answering customer calls in two minutes or less. Additionally, the oath entails that the company sticks to a deadline when it comes to addressing any problem.

FatCow Control Panels

As mentioned earlier, FatCow employs a custom built control panel for website administration. As you try your hand at it, you are not likely to be blown away by the experience, especially if you have been a Cpanel user.

But the navigation is quite straightforward, and it is decent when it comes to customization.

They also have a video tutorial handy to educate new users on this control panel, and you don’t need to be a paying customer to access to this help video.

So, if you are still not entirely convinced about this new custom panel, you can check it out first!

It is a case where the more you spend, the more you receive in free advertising resources. FatCow likes to reward people for the amount of money that is spent on them.

When you pay $25, FatCow will give you $100 in Google AdSense, $50 in Facebook ads, and $25 toward Yahoo and Bing marketing.

One of the things you can do to get your name out there is to make sure you are listed in as many directories as possible.FatCow realizes this and will give you a free listing in the Yellow Pages.com directory.

Good and Bad of FatCow

Every company has advantages and disadvantages. The good and bad sides always exist as nothing is perfect in this world. Similarly, FatCow has its own good and bad. Have a look at these.

Good of FatCow

  • Impressed users with good uptime performance.
  • FatCow fulfills the needs of customers by providing various type of web hosting plans.
  • The hosting plan starts from annual plans to budget-friendly monthly payment plans.
  • Powered by wind energy is a plus for environment

Bad of FatCow

  • Might facing a decrease in loading speed when the server is too crowded.
  • FatCow tries not to steer the customers in the wrong direction but sometimes the system is unsupportive and creates hurdles for users.
  • Internal Selling: FatCow and iPage both are kept under the same management of Endurance International Group (EIG). The companies practice a similar kind of business style. On the contrary, the companies try to lure you the various free software and web application trials. The ‘Marketing Services’ section are payable, which might induce unnecessary additional expenses.

Wrapping Up:

Combining the best elements of unlimited hosting with a significant focus on environmental efficiency, FatCow provides a reliable option for businesses who need to reduce their carbon footprint whilst at the same time increasing their online presence.

Though they may only be middle of the road regarding pricing, their excellent performance levels, general user-friendliness and extensive eCommerce support makes them one of the top companies currently on the market, and one I’d be happy to recommend.
