A Small Orange is positively one of those unheard names in web hosting industry, but don’t let that point you away from them, because they offer modest and decent hosting bundles.
They establish themselves aside from other industry with their decent, yet a striking name that is fascinating; coupled with a rich and radiant template for their website that sets the tone for their website.
It is apparently one of the friendly web hosting sites I have seen, but the question arise here does it match with the quality and features of the service.
In this review, I’m going to look at the A Small Orange website, hosting plans, pricing, customer support options, and much more. I have also checked the reviews by other customers from independently verified resources and let’s start to take a deeper dive into it.
A Small Orange has been in the hosting industry from 2003. It is not among the better-known names in the industry, but it has undoubtedly grown in quick time. Originally founded in Atlanta, Georgia US, the company currently has its HQ in Durham, North Carolina.
The founder is Tim Dorr, a web designer by profession, and it was soon acquired out by Douglas Hanna in 2010. Douglas was a customer service manager at HostGator, and now Hanna is handling CEO role there.
Douglas Hanna is also running two other hosting companies SEO Web Hosting and Host Nine. From Douglas Hanna name it is nearly cleared that A small orange is a well-connected company with Hostgator(Don’t forget to read Hostgator Review). The primary founder, Tim Dorr, is now in charge of Army of Bees web design.

A Small Orange Hosting Plans:
A Small Orange is a unique company because they refused to follow the rest of the companies that offer “unlimited everything” for very low price. Physically it is not possible to provide 250GB++ of actual space and Terabytes of bandwidth for a measly $4.85 a month (see any site that offers dedicated servers that has this much space).
What these companies do instead is hide limitations, upsell you, and terminate your site if you use too many resources.
Instead, A Small Orange offers plans that provide the specific resources you’ll need with no worry about hundreds of emails that upsell to other products and services, and they promise only to email you with billing, customer support, and the occasional random customer survey for measuring customer satisfaction.
A Small Orange includes what I feel are too many hosting choices which can turn the average customer away. There can cause a lot of confusion to newbies also. Regardless, let’s have a look at plans:
Shared Web Hosting
- Tiny: $3/month with 500MB Disk Space & 5GB Bandwidth
- Medium: $10/month with 15GB DiskSpace & 150GB Bandwidth
- Large: $20/month with 30GB Disk Space & 500GB Bandwidth
Business Web Hosting
- Startup: $20/mo with 40GB Disk Space & 600GB Bandwidth
- Small Business: $40/mo with 20GB Disk Space & 800GB Bandwidth
- Enterprise: $60/mo with 60GB Disk Space & 1000GB Bandwidth
Note: The business web hosting plans(primarily a shared hosting) include a Free SSL Certificate, dedicated IP, and PCI Compliance, which are needed for Ecommerce web hosting.
Reseller Web Hosting
- Small: $15/mo with 20GB Disk Space, 250GB B/W, & 30 hosted sites
- Medium: $25/mo with 25GB Disk Space, 500GB B/W, & 50 hosted sites
- Large: $35/mo with 50GB Disk Space, 1500GB B/W, & 100 hosted sites
Look like you are confused so just ask a few simple questions from yourself before choosing the plan. You have to choose based on how many sites, and you think you’ll need, and assume there’s a difference in hosting quality depending on the package you want.

The tiny plan is very economical. The tiny plan looks like a genuinely good option for a user with websites that don’t need a lot of disk space or bandwidth to a medium plan is an excellent option for a user who’ve freshly started out with their blogs or e-commerce websites.
I understand their some of the plans pricing is very costly, but good support, and a reliable hosting platform can be a worthable for users at the cost of a lot bad customer support and server reliability.
I believe there’s a difference in hosting quality depending on the package you choose from. The mentioned above prices are the per month price for their hosting services. They offer a discounted price if you pay in advance for three months, six months, or a year.
They do offer Cloud VPS and Dedicated servers too. Cloud hosting is priced on a sliding scale according to cores, RAM, storage space and bandwidth. Plans above a certain price point come with a free cPanel license. Have a look on prices here.
A Small Orange offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee. The company also has a live status page. But you can only see the status page after loggin into account. And you can’t archived that uptime information.
The company has also written a small section about their data centres but the information is not clearly expressed. There is no hint on the number of data centers, or where are they located.
They just mentioned that services are monitored with CCTV and equipped with UPS power supply through backup battery and diesel generator.
Reliability and Customer Support:
Support is provided 24/7, all year round, via email and ticket. Live chat support is only provided on weekdays, and it appears that there’s no telephone support.
In an interview, their CEO Douglas Hanna stated that their technical support guys work remotely from the various locations in U.S. A customer support forum is also used as a support medium, but the company agrees that this shouldn’t be counted as an official channel for getting help. But they have very responsive customer support.
Control Panel Options:
All A Small Orange hosting plans are equipped with cPanel and WHM, if applicable. This isn’t positively free for the more powerful plans, though, so double check the cost of license before signing up.
Money Back Guarantee/Cancellation Policy:
A Small Orange can offer a 5-day money back guarantee. If you want to cancel your plan after that point, and you’ve paid yearly for it, they will refund your money of unused time, which is a very real policy.
There’s no such policy for other plans.
The things I like most in A Small Orange:
- Effective branding & a distinct look and feel of website
- Transparency in their advertising like no “unlimited bandwidth” nonsense here.
- No Overselling is allowed.
- Plans are very well priced for the value, especially when you consider the quality of the service you get as well.
- There are a broad variety of plans available, so you’ll never pay for what you don’t need.
- They use the standard cPanel, which is the most easy-to-use interface for both beginners and experts.
- They use Softaculous for their CMS script installs. I think this is by far the best way to get WordPress on your site.
- Fantastic response times on customer service tickets.
- Fully Scalable as it is Easy to upgrade and downgrade according to your needs.
The things I Hate most in A Small Orange:
- There’s no phone support for basic packages, but you do get their number if you have one of the expensive plans. If phone support is crucial for you even for a basic plan, you can check out their sister company, HostNine. Still, ticket support is excellent and more than makes up for this.
- One of the rules mentioned in their TOS is that if you exceed the allocated bandwidth, then your account might be suspended until next payment is cleared. I recommend you to read this TOS.
The only loophole I think is their costly price tags. But don’t mind to pay a little extra at the urge of poor customer support and unreliable hosting platform. If you are ok to pay extra, then you should surely give a try to A Small Orange.
